I'm taking a time out from this project.

I’m taking a time out from this project.

There’s another reason why most people don’t finish the Stylelife Challenge – it works. Over the past few weeks I’ve started seeing someone. As of right now, I’m at a point where, while it’s still new, I can’t really be putting full effort into these missions for the “Rules of the Game”.

What’s interesting is that I don’t feel like I really “gamed” her. She’s someone I know through my social circle rather that some random girl I approached at a bar. However, I think it was the fun I was having, and the confidence I gained, from this project that allowed me to go after what I wanted and act on things. But it wasn’t a chase. One “non-date” lead to another, that lead to a real date, that lead to more, which lead to more and more. It was, in a word, natural.

My plan is to have fun with this girl and see where it goes. I’m going to be very careful about getting into another LTR too quickly though. But we have something right now that’s really cool and fulfilling. Should things change, I plan to pick up right where I left off with this project. Thanks to my great readers and followers, especially those of you in NYC, LA, and Canada.

To be continued…

Mission 10 was to meet three girls and use disqualification (playful comments why they are inappropriate for dating you or some other playful banter). Here are my interactions: Part 1 and Part 2.

I rocked this.

I’d have to say this has become one of my stronger points. I’m constantly using these little quips like, “We’d never work as a couple”, “Wish you were a yoga instructor”, “I’m going to hire you as my assistant”, “You just earned a gold star”, or “Settle down, who put a quarter in you?”.

I’d still say my problem is approaching women. But when I get to these playful parts, it’s fun. A blast actually.

Mission grade: B+

I’m good, but the curve is tough on this one. I know I can do even better. But I am officially 1/3 done with this project. Something tells me the best is yet to come.

Next up, Mission 11.

Again, Mission 10 is to meet three girls and use disqualification (playful comments why they are inappropriate for dating you). Below are two more interactions employing this technique.

Interaction 3 and 4 – Massage Therapy and Japanese Friend
(At a bar with large shared booths, My friend and I go sit down across from three girls. Girl 1 looks high maintenance, girl 2 has that spoiled/crabby brat look to her like she thinks she is hot stuff, girl 3 is cute…brunette, pleasant, girl-next-door look. I like her but she is the furthest away. One is to my left, two is in front toward the right, girl 3 is past her. My friend is getting drinks. I don’t think about it and just open my mouth…)

Me: Hi
Them: Hi, how’s it going?
Me: Good. So, who’s like, the leader, of your little group here?
Girl 2: What do you mean?
Me: Like, who decided to come here tonight?
Girl 2: None of us.
Girl 3: Yeah.
Girl 1: We’re meeting friends here.

(Gah. This was a poor choice…not the answer I was looking for.)

Me: Usually someone is in charge of small groups like this.

(I’ve now lost girl 2 and 3 who are now talking to each other and ignoring me.)

Girl 1: Not us.
Me: (Talking to Girl 1 alone now) Well, looking at you three I get the sense that she’s the jokester (pointing at girl 3), she’s the trouble-maker (points at girl 2), and you’re like the Mom of the group taking care of everyone and staying out of trouble.
Girl 1: (bursts out laughing)
Girl 1: (To friends) He says I look like the Mom of our group. It’s so TRUE! (laughs)
Girl 2 and 3: (laughs, smiles at me) That is true! (They go back to talking)

(Time out: Ok, that was going HORRIBLY until a complete 180 degree turnaround by calling her the Mom. What’s the deal here?)

Me: I’m Devo by the way.
Her: Hi, I’m Tina.
Me: So Tina, what do you do?
Her: I’m a massage therapist at _______.

(I don’t know why I didn’t use my “wish you were a yoga instructor” line; I should have but I was caught off guard by that. I guess part of me doesn’t want to say the same thing over and over again. But also, a pretty blonde massage therapist?! Wow.)

Me: Oh, that’s cool. (pause, snap out of it!) I’m a cigarette lighter repairman.
Her: (Looks at me oddly) A what?
Me: It’s very dexterous work. Tiny tools and parts. You know how expensive those things are. (wink)
Her: Oh, you’re joking! (laughs)
Me: (Pretending to talk to myself) Note to self: don’t date gullible girls.
Her: (laughs) Plus I have a boyfriend, we’re meeting here soon.
Me: Oh well then, problem solved. I’m meeting people here too.

Alas, no happy ending tonight. We chat politely a bit longer, her cell phone rings, her friends arrive. But strangely they arrive at the same time as my friend’s ex/current girlfriend (seriously, they are on and off all the time) along with her friend from Japan. We had to share the bench and it was a little cozy. But this made conversation quite easy. It was mostly just regular getting to know you talk. And it went well! We’re planning to meet for happy hour somewhere next week.

Again, Mission 10 is to meet three girls and use disqualification (playful comments why they are inappropriate for you). Below are my first two interactions employing this technique.

Interactions 1 and 2 – Cougar Attacks with Anna Faris
(I’m with my friend from Hawaii. We’re at the same bar where I had one of my most successful approaches ever. I’m starting to like this place. We’d been upstairs and we were going to have one drink at the bar downstairs before we leave to another place. We go to sit down on a long shared couch area…)

Me: Is anyone sitting here?
Woman: I’m waiting for my friend but you can move when she gets here.
Me: Ok, thanks.

(My friend and I sit down, with one woman, who looked like a Moroccan version of Rachel Weisz, to me on my left and two girls facing my friend and I on our right.)

Rachel: When you walked by I could totally tell you wanted to talk to me.

(I’m surprised she started talking to me immediately after I sit down, but luckily I can be quick-witted…)

Me: I’m going to translate that to when I walked by YOU totally wanted to talk to ME. And that’s cool.
Rachel: Ha ha ha!

(We exchange a few pleasantries about what she does, living in Seattle, and the bar we’re in. She’s flirty and I play along.)

Rachel: So do you come here a lot?
Me: “Do you come here a lot”? That’s the oldest pick-up line in the book! You gotta play it cool. (smile)
Rachel: (laughs) Right…How old are you anyway?
Me: (touching her arm lightly) A woman never tells her age.
Rachel: (grabs my arm) You’re not a woman!
Me: Well you ASSUME I’m not. But I’ll tell you this much. I’m old enough to have a good career and young enough to still have fun. How old are you?
Rachel: I have a 14 year-old kid…
Me: Oh cool, how many grandkids? (smile and wink)
Rachel: Oh fuck you! (smiles and flicks me off)
Me: Wow, a milf who swears like a sailor! You oughta do well here tonight but I better stay far away. (smiles)

(Oops, did I go out of line there? That was a BIT bold calling her a milf…)

Rachel: (Laughs, loudly) (Pause, flirtatious smile) So…have you been upstairs?

(Guess it was ok…)

Me: Yeah, it’s cool.
Rachel: What is it, like a dance floor?
Me: No. It’s a petting zoo. There’s a couple donkeys and pigs there, it’s fun.
Rachel: (laughs, loudly again) You’re funny.
Me: Thanks. (Pause) So you look somewhat fashionable, perhaps you can settle a debate my friend Andy, right here, we’re having. Is khaki, like khaki pants, a color or a fabric?
Rachel: This is what you guys talk about?
Me: Well, we were talking to these four frat guys all wearing the same pants and were wondering. This is Andy by the way.
Rachel: Nice to meet you.
Andy: Nice to meet you too, what are we talking about?
Rachel: Your friend is telling me about your khaki conversation.
Andy: (blank stare)
Rachel: I think it’s both. Perhaps you should ask them? (points at the girls on Andy’s right, they’ve been watching us, this woman has a loud laugh.)

(One girl looks like Anna Faris. Pretty, approaching gorgeous if you just count the eyes. Very sexy eyes. But trying too hard overall. Fake blond hair and WAY too much makeup.)

Me: Good idea, Andy, ask them if khaki, like khaki pants, is a color or a fabric.
Andy: (He trusts me and plays along) Hey guys, these two are asking if you think khaki is a color or a fabric?

(Anna and Friend smile and give us a tilted glance, clearly intrigued.)

Anna and Friend: Uh…what?
Me: You know, khaki like khaki pants. Is it a color or a fabric?
Anna: I think it’s a color.
Me: No, no, no. There’s all sorts of color of khaki pants. Green khaki, brown khaki, beige khaki.
Anna: Oh, you’re right. Maybe both then?
Me: Yeah, that’s what we’re leaning towards too. I’m Devo by the way. This is my friend Andy. And this is my other friend…uh, what was your name again?
Rachel: Hi, I’m Rachel.
Them: Nice to meet you.

(Andy then talks to the new girls, I continue talking with Rachel. Then Rachel’s friend arrives, we do introductions, and she updates her on what we’ve all been discussing. While she is catching up with her friend, I turn to join my friend and the new girls.)

Anna: Any more fashion questions?
Me: No, you settled the debate, thanks. (smile)

(My friend whispers to me that Anna has a boyfriend and we should go next door. I say ok, but first…)

Me: So what do you guys do besides intervening in bar room debates?
Friend: I work at an insurance company.
Anna: I’m in Marketing.
Me: Oh, that’s too bad. I was hoping you were going to say yoga instructor. Oh well, plenty of girls in here for me. (smile)

(Looks at me for a moment, then smiles and laughs. My friend starts talking to her friend. She then responds…)

Anna: Sorry to disappoint you.
Me: I’ll get by. So my buddy and I have to go meet some friends next door soon. But can I ask you some dating advice?
Anna: (smiles) Sure!
Me: So I met this girl at the Minneapolis airport. It was on a train platform, Christmas Eve. She was going to Seattle, I was going to Minneapolis, we were swapping cities.

(She is absolutely captivated. I’m shocked…though I shouldn’t be. These girls were just sitting there, doing nothing. A box of Kleenex would have been entertaining.)

Me: So we had a great conversation on the train, I think things are going well. But then, her stop comes and I don’t have time to get her phone or email or anything. I just say, “nice to meet you” and she gets off.

(She nods, I still have her.)

Me: I’m kicking myself. She was super cute and fun. But…I have her first name, school, and department. Do you think I should track her down?
Anna: Like, how?
Me: Maybe email her department and say that we got cut off and I’ll ask them to forward her my message?
Anna: Oh, yes, I think you should do that. You’ve got nothing to lose.
Me: Ok, good. I’m glad you said that…because that’s exactly what I did.
Anna: (laughs) And?!?!
Me: Settle down! (smile) So yeah, I sent a message to her school, and sure enough, a couple days later I got an email from her.
Anna: (excitedly) Ohhh! She likes you!
Me: Just wait, the story gets even better…

(At this point my friend clearly wants to go next door. We’re supposed to meet his current/ex-girlfriend and her friend. I’m going to have to talk to him about this. But if she does have a boyfriend, it’s better we go. Plus, while hot, this isn’t the type of girl I see myself with. Sure I would gladly have done who knows what with her…but for some reason, I didn’t feel like I was passing up on anything by leaving.)

Me: We’ve got to meet some friends next door, if you want to hear the rest of the story, head over there.
Anna: I’d like to but we’re meeting our boyfriends here soon.
Me: (Of course…nobody is single here…) Cool. See ya later!
Anna: Bye!

(Then I go say goodbye to Rachel as well.)

Rachel: Oh, you’re leaving?! We’re going upstairs to dance and pet the donkey.
Me: (Laughs) Yeah, we might be back later, see you around…

Overall, I’d say that went well; it was fun at least. I’m sure that Rachel was into me. But something inside said to stay away. It could have something to do with her having a 14-year-old and being a bit crazy. Just a thought. As for Anna, I got the sense that she gets a TON of interest from men as she had that look to her. But at least she was friendly. She never did show up at the other place though.

P.S. If you’re curious about the airport story I was telling, read this post.

Mission 10 brings us back on track. No more approaching dudes for mission requirements. The focus of this mission is disqualification. The goal of disqualification is to meet women and tell, in some way, them you don’t want to date them. The author, Neil Strauss, claims this is the “bedrock of flirting”.

The mission: Meet three women and use a disqualifier.

One important note on disqualification from the book:

Most disqualifiers are meant to be playful. Others are used to demonstrate that you have high standards and won’t date or sleep with just anyone. However, a disqualifier should never be hostile, critical, judgemental, or condescending. There’s a fine line between flirting and hurting. And disqualification is never intended to be mean or insulting. So say these with a smile on your face and laughter in your voice, as if you were good-naturedly picking on a younger sibling.

Some ideas for disqualifiers:

Ask her what her favorite movie is, then respond, “You actually liked that? That’s it. I’m going home. Nice meeting you.”

Do you have a gold medal? I only date women who’ve won a gold medal, you better hurry and get one.

What’s the wildest, craziest thing you’ve ever done? That’s great. You and my grandma would really get along.

A good girl like you should probably be talking to a nice boy like that one over there.

If she touches you, hey now, hands off the merchandise. That’ll be $40.

The book has a bunch more of these…

The author also writes, “This is going to be the most difficult mission of the challenge so far”. But I don’t think so. I think I’ve been doing this in several of my interactions so far by saying girls are the “Mom” of the group or telling them I was hoping they were a yoga instructor. I think this should go well.

Mission 9 is now complete. Again, the mission was to approach two sets of mixed groups. Groups of three or more that contain both men and women. I feel like with each completion the screen should flash and I hear a bell and then a voice, like James Earl Jones, saying “Mission passed”. I’ve probably played too many video games.

My approaches were detailed in a previous post: Mission 9 Field Test Approaches

On a side note, the author states that 19/20 people who begin the Stylelife Challenge do not finish it. And the majority quit on Mission 9. I think that could be for a few reasons.

First, it was difficult. Just when I was starting to feel like I was making progress approaching women, I had to approach MEN and women. But another reason people quit at mission 9 is that those first 8 missions might be enough for many people. I know that if I lived in the same city as the girl from my airport fling, we’d likely be dating. Simply being social, engaging, groomed, with good posture makes a HUGE difference alone. Despite my progress, I’m not quitting; I’m sticking with it…this is fun.

So while this was my least favorite mission so far it was, however, during this mission that I had the most success outside of the missions. There was my airport fling along with another undocumented make-out session with gym class girl. (applause)

Mission grade: B

My approaches, for this mission specifically, went nowhere (Grade: C). But my extracurricular activities made this whole project worth the effort (Grade: A). That averages out to a B.

Next up, Mission 10.

To review, Mission 9 is to approach two sets of mixed groups. Groups that contain both men and women. Here are how my two approaches happened.

Approach 1 of 2
(I’m at a bar with a friend in Minneapolis. My friend goes to the bathroom while I go to get drinks. As I wait for my drinks, I notice a stunning girl talking to two guys sitting next to me at the bar. One of them was singing something…)

Me: Hey guys, that song sounds so familiar…what is it?
Dude 1: (In an effeminate voice) It’s “blah blah” by the blahs.
Me: Oh…how does it go again?
Dudes 1 and 2: (singing loudly, holding hands now) La la la la! La la!

(Hot girl smiles and walks away.)

Me: (Awww, crap.)

Dudes 1 and 2: (Continue singing…others at bar now start to look)
Me: You guys sing that very well, great duet.
Dude 2: Well THANK youuuuu.

(Abort! Abort! Abort!)

Me: Well, I gotta get this drink back to my friend, take care!
Dudes 1 and 2: Bye!

So yeah, they were really drunk and really gay. And the girl ejected. Obviously not a shining moment in my recent history of trying to meet women. I don’t really know what I could have done differently other than absolutely everything. But two gay dudes with a hot single girl…that should be good, right?

Approach 2 of 2
I’m going to meet some friends over in Bellevue, WA. I never go to Bellevue for nightlife. But this night things just worked out that way. As I head to the restaurant, I pass two girls and a guy on the sidewalk. They’re dressed well.

Me: Hi, do you guys know if (restaurant name) is this way?
Dude: Oh yeah, just take left down that ramp there.
Me: Thanks, have you guys been there?
Girl 1: We tried earlier, but it was busy.
Me: Yeah, I had no idea Bellevue was this lively. It’s fun.
Girl 1: It’s changed in the last year. These places didn’t even exist before then.
Me: I’m Devo by the way.

(We all shake hands and exchange names.)

Me: You guys going to head there too?
Dude: No, we just had dinner and we’re heading home (nods head towards arriving car).

(Car pulls up)

Me: Well, nice to meet you guys!
Dude: You too.
Girl 1: Have a good night!

Nice people…by no means a horrible interaction. But I took that as my cue to head on. I then went on to meet my friends and had a fun night in Bellevue.

While not specifically part of my “missions” I attribute the following story to this project. I approached a girl, got caught up in it, and made something happen. It all started Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve day at the Minneapolis Airport…
(I’d just landed in Minneapolis at 6:30 am. I had been up for about 24 hours and was quite out of it. I was waiting at the light rail train platform to take me to downtown when I noticed a tall, slender girl with strawberry blonde hair and big cute eyes. Something about her made her easy to approach. First, she was nearby, but something about her body language gave a signal. I just say the first thing on my mind…)

Me: How often do these trains arrive?
Her: Oh, usually about every 10 minutes. I think it’s slower because of the holiday.
Me: Oh, makes sense. So where are you headed today?
Her: Seattle.
Me: Oh really? I just came from there.
Her: Really? Do you live there?
Me: Yeah, just visiting MN for the holidays. Do you live here?
Her: I’m living here for my fellowship but I’m from Seattle.
Me: So we’re swapping cities. I’m Devo, by the way.
Her: Hi, I’m Jessica (not her real name, fyi)

(Then we chat about Seattle and Mpls, smile, etc. There’s something here, it’s easy between us. The train eventually arrives and we chat on the train until the next stop.)

Her: (looks at me like she’s waiting for something) This is my stop. It was really nice to meet you.
Me: (Oh no, now what…do something! Get her number! Do I have a pen? Do I give her my business card? There’s no time!) Yeah, nice to meet you too. Have a nice time in Seattle.
Her: Thanks… (smiles, gets off train)
Me: (I’m kicking myself. Arrrrrggggghhhh! You can’t miss opportunities like this. Tired, out of it, whatever. It doesn’t matter what the excuse, it’s still an opportunity missed. I mean, that was romantic. A chance encounter on Christmas Eve on the train platform as we fly to each other’s cities. I’m an idiot! I should know better by now! Doh doh doh!)

Later, at home…
(On the Dec. 26th I’m at home. I think back to my brief exchange on the train. I know her first name, her school, and her department. It’s not enough to look her up online anywhere. But I think there was something there betweem us. I should do SOMETHING. I find her department’s website and email them…

To: Her School
From: Devo
I’m trying to reach a student named Jessica who’s now at the __________ in Minneapolis, MN. We had our conversation cut short on Christmas eve day. If you could pass along my message to her that would be great.

(Ok, I did something; I could put my mind at ease. I felt like chances were slim, the department could simply ignore that message, or they could pass it along and then she could go “This guy is crazy. DELETE.” Whatever. I’ve done all I could. It’s up to fate. But then, a couple days later, the 29th, I get an interesting email…)

To: Devo
From: Jessica
I was contacted by my school today and they forwarded your email and message. How is your holiday going? Are you still in Minnesota? Hope you survived the snow storm! I’m back in St. Paul after my short trip home.

(Well, holy crap it worked! When I saw that name pop up in my inbox I was elated! Connection re-established. Turns out I am not crazy and did, in fact, read her signals correctly. I enjoy this for a while before replying. And then I think to myself, I got this far, I may as well go for it and try see her while I’m in town. I write back…)

To: Jessica
From: Devo
I’m happy to hear from you. Surprised too…it was a shot in the dark with the school. But it turns out you’re the only Jessica grad student in the department. Anyway, you were cute and fun to talk to on the light rail. I wanted a chance to get to know you better…but your stop came quickly. And in my defense I had been up for about 24 hours so I was a bit out of it. I head back to Seattle tomorrow evening. Could you meet for a cup of coffee/tea this afternoon around 3 or 4? Or perhaps tomorrow morning around 10?

(Now we’ll find out just what we’re dealing with. Again, the chances of meeting are slim simply on a logistical level. Maybe here’s where she ignores the message or says it won’t work? I get this reply shortly after I sent my message…)

To: Devo
From: Jessica
I think I am also the only student who ventured to Minnesota for a fellowship, so it was easy for the school to track me down! I don’t get off work until 4 today and I have to work tomorrow until 4 as well. What time do you leave tomorrow? I am close to the airport, so I could meet you tomorrow afternoon around 4:15/4:30 before you head out! I understand you may be rushed tomorrow. Let me know if this is a possibility.

(I’m thrilled at this point. There’s chemistry between us, we want to see each other. It’s a testament to how quickly these things can happen. We spent maybe 10-15 minutes together on that train. That’s not long. I write back…)

To: Jessica
From: Devo
Yes, good idea on that by the way. MN in the winter. Good thinking.
I figured you probably had to work. But both today or tomorrow at 4:30 pm could work. Tonight I am meeting a few of my buddies around 6:30 but I’m open before that. Then tomorrow my flight leaves at 6:30 pm.
Hmmm…
We could do something really crazy and meet at the airport tomorrow at 4:30. There’s a Starbucks there near baggage claim. I could check in and get rid of my luggage and go downstairs for a while before going through security.
I mean, everyone agrees how fun it is to hang out at the airport, right?

(An airport for a first date?! Who does that? She did say she was close so I figured it’s within the realm of possibility. Let’s see where this goes…)

To: Devo
From: Jessica
I think tomorrow will work better with my schedule. Starbucks at 4:30 sounds good – it only makes sense given we are both Seattlites! You think it’s near baggage claim? I’m not sure exactly where it is but I’ll find it. Have fun with your friends tonight.

(Boom. Date. Now, will she show up? I’m going to be there anyway so I have nothing to lose. I then write back one more message giving her my mobile number and asking for hers. She sends it to me. I then go out with my buddies in Minneapolis and have a great time. We went to all sorts of places and talked to several women. We also drank way too much. But it was a fun New Years Eve Eve. (More on that later) Next, date time…)

At the Airport, the next day, New Years Eve…
(I check in for my flight and I send Jessica a text message letting her know I’m almost ready. She writes back that she got off work early and was there. She showed up! It’s going to happen!)

At Starbucks…
(I walk by baggage claim and then I see her on the benches. She gets up and smiles right away. She’s wearing the same coat as before. It’s a cute winter jacket.)

Me: Hi Jessica. It’s great to see you.
Her: Hi Devo. Thanks.

(Honestly, I don’t remember the specifics of this initial exchange very well. It was a bit awkward but fun too. We get drinks from Starbucks, I paid, and then we find a place to sit. We talk for about 30 minutes about random things, getting to know each other. Work, travel, music, hobbies, family, differences between MN and Seattle. Then, we get interupted…)

Service worker: Sorry guys, I need to bring carts to that closet (that we’re blocking).
Us: Oh, no problem. (We get up to move.)
Her: Should we sit here? (points at chairs)
Me: How about we take a little walk?
Her: Oh sure, you’ll be sitting on the plane.

(We start walking.)

Me: How tall are you?
Her: (Looks at me a bit oddly.) 5′ 7″…why?
Me: Just curious, it’s tough to guess. That’s a good height. I’m 5′ 12″. (One of my tests)
Her: (Gives me the cutest tilted head sideways glance. Smiles.)
Me: (She passed.)
Her: So tell me, how many girls have you picked up on the light rail before? (smiles)
Me: (chuckles) I like the light rail. I do pretty well here. I’m one for one. (smiles)

(We then walk and chat some more and eventually find some somewhat isolated benches. We sit kitty-corner from each other and chat for a bit more. I check the time. 5:15 pm. My plan to bring in the Swedish New Year is running late. I’m choking. I sum up my courage figuring that the worst that could happen is she says no and we go our seperate ways. I go for it…)

Me: This has been fun. I wish I didn’t have to leave.
Her: (sigh) Yeah, me too.
Me: So I have to catch my flight fairly soon. But first, it’s now 2010 in Sweden. I think we should kiss to bring in the new year.

(I can’t really describe the look she gave me. I think there were several emotions/reactions that went through her mind. “Is he serious?” “I’d like that” “We’re in an airport!” “This is strange”, etc. She settles on…)

Her: (smiles) Ok.

(I kiss her.)

Me: Happy New Year.
Her: Happy New Year.

(Make out. It was nice, tender. Happy 2010 Sweden indeed!)

Me: That was nice. I really, really wish I didn’t have to go.

(We both check the time.)

Her: It’s 5:15, we’re 15 minutes past Swedish New Year. (smiles) But whatever. (smiles)
Me: Come on, I’ll walk you back to the entrance.

(We walk back and talk about when we could next see eachother. It’s not good news. Months apart.)

Me: Have fun tonight.
Her: You too, have a safe flight. Don’t lose my number.
Me: I won’t. One more…

(Goodbye kiss.)

Me: Bye.
Her: Bye.

So that was that. It was easy, genuine, and random. And who knows…things would have likely continued differently had we lived in the same city. It was sad too, but at the same time, wonderful. Apparently, I’m a hopeless romantic…I miss her as I write this.

Mission 9 is another “turning point” mission. The author, Neil Strauss, claims that only 19/20 people who start actually finish all the missions. And most stop on Mission 9.

This is exactly why I’m doing this website. It’d be so much easier to quit and just let myself down. But if I quit, all the people following this story and cheering me on, would be let down as well. I want to be a doer, a finisher, a closer.

That said, Mission 9 sucks.

Mission Overview
The mission is to approach at least two sets of three or more people of groups that contain both women and men. I don’t want to do this. I’m still not comfortable approaching lone women, much less a group, with dudes. There are a few more notes in this section’s briefing that made an impact. One suggested to stay in a conversation longer than comfortable, even if you run out of things to say. I feel that I should have been doing this. A couple times I ejected a bit too early.

Review Time
Additionally, it’s time to review previous missions, doing things that were missed, or repeating things where more practice is needed.

Therefore, I also need to:

Do the posture exercise again

Do to vocal exercise again

Get my hair styling at my re-scheduled appointment

Get my clothes tailored

Get a manicure/pedicure

Lastly, the author writes in the book that the following missions are going to “pick up the pace”. I should be pleased about this considering my grades on the past few missions. We’ll see.
